Extratropical sources of Equatorial Pacifie upwelling in an OGCM

چکیده
[1] The extratropical sources of equatorial undercurrent (EUC) water have been identified for an ocean circulation model using Lagrangian trajectory analysis, lt has been found that the EUe waters emenate from a wide range of latitudes in the Pacific basin, with its densest constituent watennass being Subantarctic Mode Water (SAMW) from 50S, Further analysis of the basin-scale circulation fields has revealed significant advective diapycnal mass fluxes associated with intergyre exchange, As a result of these diapycnal mass fluxes, the EUe transport as a function of density at 151°W (an Eulerian diagnostic) looks quite different from the original subduction rate as a function of density for the same collection of water particles, This implieates diapycnal vertical mixing as an important p1ayer in detetmining the preferred density horizon of maximum Eue transport along the equator, ln summary, these results illustrate an important interdependence between advective and diapycnal mixing processes associated with basin-scale inter-gyre and inter-basin exchange in determining the mean equatorial stratification and EUe structure,

Impact of Atmospheric Intraseasonal Variability in the Indian Ocean: Low-Frequency Rectification in Equatorial Surface Current and Transport
An ocean general circulation model (OGCM) is used to investigate the low-frequency (period longer than 90 days) rectification of atmospheric intraseasonal variability (10–90-day periods) in zonal surface current and transport of the equatorial Indian Ocean. A hierarchy of OGCM solutions is found in an actual tropical Indian Ocean basin for the period of 1988–2001. To help to identify and isolat...
متن کاملOn the Signatures of Equatorial and Extratropical Wave Forcing in Tropical Tropopause Layer Temperatures
Temperatures in the tropical tropopause layer (TTL) play an important role in stratosphere–troposphere exchange and in the formation and maintenance of thin cirrus clouds. Many previous studies have examined the contributions of extratropical and equatorial waves to the TTL using coarse-vertical-resolution satellite and reanalysis data. In this study, the authors provide new insight into the ro...
متن کاملEquatorial upwelling enhances nitrogen fixation in the Atlantic Ocean
[1] Surface waters in upwelling regions are thought to be nutrient rich and hence inhibit nitrogen fixation (diazotrophy) because diazotrophs can preferentially assimilate nitrate and ammonia instead of expending energy to fix dinitrogen. We found average nitrogen fixation rates to be two to seven times higher in the surface waters of the upwelling region of the eastern equatorial Atlantic than...
متن کاملAn Observing System Simulation Experiment for the Indian Ocean
An integrated in situ Indian Ocean observing system (IndOOS) is simulated using a high-resolution ocean general circulation model (OGCM) with daily mean forcing, including an estimate of subdaily oceanic variability derived from observations. The inclusion of subdaily noise is fundamental to the results; in the mixed layer it is parameterized as Gaussian noise with an rms of 0.1°C; below the mi...
متن کاملA global picture of the seasonal persistence of stratospheric ozone anomalies
[1] Interannual anomalies in vertical profiles of stratospheric ozone, in both equatorial and extratropical regions, have been shown to exhibit a strong seasonal persistence, namely, extended temporal autocorrelations during certain times of the calendar year. Here we investigate the relationship between this seasonal persistence of equatorial and extratropical ozone anomalies using the SAGE‐co...
